About
Take part in an unforgettable 7 day adventure with the Uganda Marathon - a once in a lifetime experience that promises to be packed full of meaningful activities, community spirit and lasting friendships.
During your trip you’ll see the long term impact Uganda Marathon brings to the community and have the chance to leave your own legacy with a range of local volunteering opportunities and activities. With over 15 charities to work with during the week there’s plenty of rewarding experiences that meet with your own individual interests and skills. From helping build community resource centres and supporting healthcare initiatives to sports events and educational activities with local children.
After a fun and rewarding day your evenings will be spent around the campfire with like minded people from all around the world. There’s a real community vibe in the Athletes’ Village with communal meals, outdoor bar and fireside entertainment including traditional dances, drumming sessions and break-dancing each night.
You don’t have to be super fit to join Uganda Marathon, there’s a whole range of distances from 10k to 42k to run or walk, but if running isn’t for you your contribution is still invaluable - supporting the runners with motivational spectating, manning water stations or coordinating the race day party are all hugely beneficial and important roles for the success of the day.
After race day you have the option of extending your stay to experience the incredible wildlife and scenery Uganda has to offer with exclusive discounted tours. See the “Big 5” on safari, explore hidden waterfalls or trek into the rainforest for the chance to encounter gorillas in the wild.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The Uganda Marathon is held once a year May/June and therefore Marathon experiences are only bookable for the period Sunday 24th - Sunday 31st May 2020. Volunteering outside of this period can be arranged on request

Volunteering Opportunities
If you’d like to continue volunteering after the Marathon or are interested in volunteering during other times of the year there are plenty of opportunities and charities you can get involved with through Uganda Marathon. Work with assisting healthcare, educational or community development projects or even put your handicraft skills to use and build essential resource centres for the community.
There’s no requirement to volunteer, just a can-do and positive attitude and the ability to commit to at least 3 days from 09.00am - 5.30pm. Your placements will be individually matched to your interests and skills.
Volunteering costs start from £350 and includes all in-country transport, accommodation, breakfast and lunch during your placement.
About The Area
Known as the “Pearl of Africa” Uganda is famed for its rich green and tropical landscape, abundant wildlife and The Rwenzoris - Africa's tallest mountain range. The thick rainforests are home to some of the world's most endangered species, the Mountain Gorilla and Chimpanzee. With 60 Protected Wildlife and Nature areas the country has some of the best safari and bird watching opportunities in the continent. But it’s not just the rich environment and abundant wildlife that draws people to Uganda, it’s also one of the safest countries to visit with low crime rates, friendly people and smiles all round.
Uganda Marathon is located in the city of Masaka in Central Uganda. Less than 40km from the Equator and the shores of Lake Victoria - believed to be the source of the River Nile and the largest tropical lake in the world!
With daily activities and volunteering opportunities during your stay you’re guaranteed to have plenty of fun and memorable experiences during your stay. However if you would like to make the most of your journey to Uganda there are a number of discounted extension options to take advantage of. Here’s a few suggestions to inspire your trip:
Trek the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for a close encounter with endangered and rare Mountain Gorillas
Go on safari to The Queen Elizabeth National Park and witness the “Big 5” in action with tree climbing lions, elephants, hippos, leopards and many more awe-inspiring wild animals
Explore the area from the air and fly in a bi-plane over Lake Victoria
Be a daredevil and go white water rafting in the source of The Nile for a thrilling action packed adventure

Meet the hosts
The Uganda Marathon was the brainchild of Henry, Andy, Nick and Moses. Four old friends who came together to improve the lives of the vulnerable in the Masaka region of Uganda. In 2014 they founded a special and unique event – a sporting event and cultural festival full of love, fun and adventure.
Each year communities, runners and volunteers from all over the world come together to help make a lasting impact through volunteering with local projects, fundraising and fun activities in the run up to the main event, a tough marathon through the dirt paths of rural Uganda alongside 5000 Ugandan runners.
How To Get There
Masaka is approximately 140km from the Capital City of Kampala and 120km from Entebbe International Airport. Airport pick up and scheduled return transfers are included with your stay. Should you wish to return on an alternative date a return transfer can be arranged for an additional fee on request. Full details of transfer dates and alternative methods of transport will be provided with your booking confirmation.
