Experience the intimacy and beauty of the Cook Islands whilst making a positive impact to the community of Aitutaki. This placement offers a holiday of a lifetime with educational volunteering, village location allowing you to truly immerse yourself in the culture and customs of the islanders and a range of fun activities and excursions to experience after a morning’s volunteering. Every day of your placement promises to be culturally immersive, meaningful and action packed with adventure and travel experiences.
From the moment you land on Aitutaki you will be welcomed at the airport by the Travel Teacher Team who will take you to the village where you will be greeted by the locals with an Island Night experience with dancing and an opportunity to learn traditional Cook Islands Maori - your first night in the Cook Islands will be an experience you will never forget!
Full training and assistance will be provided both before and during your stay.
A Typical Day
After breakfast at your accommodation you will make your way to the local school to support teachers in delivering academic and life skill lessons - this could be helping the teachers prepare for classes, helping children with creative activities, sports or language skills and assisting with homework. Your working day will finish at midday leaving you with the rest of the day to get out there and participate in one of the many excursions and activities on offer with like-minded travellers before returning your volunteer accommodation for the night.

Your Accommodation
During your trip you will be provided with shared volunteer accomodation in a local community facility with access to washing and self catering cooking facilities. A member of the Travel Teacher Team will be onhand 24/7 to help you settle in and provide assistance during your stay. The volunteer accommodation sits in the heart of the community at the village centre and is a stone's throw from the local market, shop and takeaway restaurant.
About The Area
The Cook Islands are a collection of 15 small droplets of land in the vast South Pacific Ocean. With pristine and unspoilt tropical white sand beaches, turquoise seas and lagoons surrounded by barrier reefs they’re the ultimate tropical island paradise you won’t want to leave.
You will be based in the island of Aitutaki, a short but enthralling flight from Rarotonga, famed for its vast lagoon, coral reefs and white sand beaches.
Working half days means you’ll have plenty of time to explore Aitutaki and the surrounding islands and with a range of activities and excursions included in your stay you’ll have plenty to see, do and experience during your stay. Here are just a few highlights for your castaway adventure:
Head to Oo'tu Beach and try out some Stand Up Paddleboarding on the crystal clear waters or just chill out and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Discover clam farming and snorkelling at the Aitutaki Marine Research centre (AMRC)
Explore the island by bike or hike up Maunga Pu, the highest point on the island with stunning views of the turquoise lagoon.

Travel Teacher was founded Matt Ray whose unrelenting curiosity has taken him to some of the farthest corners of the world. Driven by a passion to inspire others to step outside their comfort zone Matt set up Travel Teacher in 2015.
Travel Teacher exists to help provide opportunities for people to travel and explore the world whilst making a sustainable impact through cultural immersion, education and positive travel experiences. By volunteering and travelling with Travel Teacher you will be directly contributing to help provide access to education and cultural exchange in remote areas of the world.
How To Get There
Aitutaki is a short flight from the Cook Islands’ main island of Rarotonga where you will be met at the airport by one of the team and transported to the village.
