About The Area
Hamanasi Resort is located in the small traditional Garifuna village of Hopkins on the Caribbean Coast of Southern Belize. This area is rich in culture, biodiversity and wildlife including a huge variety of birds and mammals. The Garinagu people of the village are of African Caribbean descent with their own unique language and culture that is recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. Traditional drumming and dancing features strongly amongst this fishing community and the village itself offers lots of intimate restaurants and bars as well as authentic gift shops and drumming schools. Just behind the village is a savannah swampland teeming with birds and set against the backdrop of the stunning Maya Mountains in the distance.
There’s something for everyone in this area, with beaches, jungles, cultural immersion and plenty of rare and endangered wildlife including jaguars, margays, pumas and ocelots as well as bountiful marine and bird life. The possibilities for adventure here are positively endless! Below are just a few suggestions to make your holiday to Belize the most memorable and life changing experience ever:
Learn to dive or snorkel and explore the worlds 2nd longest barrier reef with a vast array of coral species and marine life
Check out the Blue Hole, an incredible underwater phenomenon
Go swimming with turtles, sharks, eagle rays and tropical fish
Learn spearfishing whilst helping protect the conservation of marine life and control populations of invasive Lionfish (all Lionfish caught during this activity are prepared in the Hamanasi kitchen)
Take a hike to the Mayflower Jungle and have a natural shower under the waterfall
Visit the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary - surrounded by the Maya Mountains and towering Victoria's Peak, the Basin's 120,000 acres is also home to jaguarundi, margays, ocelots, pumas, deer, howler monkeys and tapirs. If you’re feeling really adventurous you can also take a guided night hike when the jungle really comes alive!
Explore the caves and jungles of Belize at St. Herman's Blue Hole National Park. This park is in one of Belize's oldest jungles and the sacred St. Herman's Cave is filled with stalactites, stalagmites and ancient Mayan pottery shards
Volunteer to help the communities and animals of Hopkins working with the Hopkins Belize Humane Society to provide healthcare to the animals of the village or assist with teaching in one of the local schools
Experience Mayan Culture, learn about the traditions of the Mayan People, medicinal plants, musical instruments and meet with native Mayan families
Get culturally immersed with the Garifuna, learn to cook authentic food, explore cultural insights with Garifuna families and feel the beat of the Garifuna drums

How To Get There
Getting to Hamanasi Resort will require a short internal flight or an adventurous drive. The Hamanasi team can help you organise your journey with help booking internal flight tickets, transfers from the Dangriga Airstrip and general travel advice should you need.
Fly: The nearest international airport is Belize City International, from here it’s best to take a short internal flight to Dangriga Airstrip. If you would like to arrive at Hamanasi the same day it’s best arrange your international flight before 4pm to catch the connecting flight to Dangriga.
Once you arrive at the airstrip a member of the team will be waiting to take you to the Hamanasi Resort.
The internal flight is made on a small 14 seat plane with low baggage allowance - if your bags are too heavy for the flight they will be flown over the following day so please make sure that any essential items such as valuables and medicines are carried in the cabin with you. During the flight you’ll enjoy incredible views of the Belizean countryside
Drive - Whilst it is possible to drive to the resort rather than take an internal flight poor signage, unlit roads and slippery conditions make this a hair-raising journey even for the most adventurous! Please only attempt this drive using a fully insured 4x4 and avoid driving at night.
