Volunteering Opportunities
If you feel inspired to help out in the community during your stay you can volunteer to help in the local projects run in association with Footsteps in The Gambia. The type of work you will be given will depend on the needs of the community at the time as well as your own skills and interests but could include planting trees to help conservation efforts, participating in beach clean ups, helping out in the local farms or even meeting local entrepreneurs to provide advice and support to help them follow their dreams and ambitions successfully. There’s no cost or requirements to volunteer, you can work as many days (or as few!) as you’d like, working any day of the week for up to 7 hours per day.
If you’d like to help out during your stay just enter this information in the special requests section of your booking enquiry form or speak to one of the staff during your visit to arrange
About The Area
Footsteps in The Gambia is located just next to the Koofung Private Forest Park and about 20 minutes walk from the beach in the small coastal town of Gunjur. This area is a haven for beach lovers and bird watchers alike, with over 500 species of bird from vultures to sunbirds and just about everything in between and soft golden sandy beaches. Nearby there is a cultural heritage museum, a reptile centre and an art gallery which features pieces from talented local and national artists.
There’s plenty to see and do at Footsteps in The Gambia, from learning yoga to enjoying the spa and beauty treatments on site but if you’re looking to get out and about here are a few of our favourite suggestions:
Spend a day (or more) volunteering where you will work with the community to clean beaches, plant trees or help budding businesses with their startups
Take a boat trip around the mangrove creeks and discover traditional oyster harvesting methods
Check out the Reptile Centre for a fascinating insight into Gambian snakes and reptiles
Head down to Lemon Fish Art to see Gambia’s finest artists and take a piece of Gambia home with you
Head out on a bird watching tour to see some of the hundreds of birds native to The Gambia
Learn how to take print worthy photos with the photography tours at Footsteps
Spend a day watching the fishermen haul their catch and the fish preparation process

Meet the hosts
Footsteps in The Gambia was founded by David White after he booked a cheap family holiday to The Gambia in 1999 - little did he know at the time this holiday would change his life completely! During his holiday David realised the real cost of cheap holidays, that many workers at the hotel were paid very low wages and tourism was providing little economic benefit to the wider community so he decided he needed to do something about it. As soon as David returned home he started thinking about how he could improve the lives of Gambians and set about making plans to start his own holiday accommodation that not only treated staff as part o the family with fair pay but also that helped the wider community and allowed guests to have a positive impact during their holiday. With the support of his father in law, Len, David quit his finance consultancy job to head over to The Gambia and build Footsteps in The Gambia, opening their doors to visitors for the first time in 2002. Now that’s what we call a life changing holiday!
